"Do It Over again" is a song by the American rock ring the Beach Boys that was released as single on July 8, 1968.[3] [4] It was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Honey as a self-conscious callback to the group's before surf image, which they had not embraced since 1964. Love and Wilson also share the pb vocal on the song.
The song was issued only two weeks after the release of the ring'southward album Friends, with the album track "Wake the World" as its B-side. Information technology reached number 20 on the U.Due south. Billboard Hot 100 and became their second number one hit in the Uk. A slightly edited version of the vocal, using an extract from the Smile outtake "Workshop", subsequently appeared equally the opening track on the Embankment Boys' 1969 album 20/20.
"Practise Information technology Again" has been rerecorded in one case past the ring (in 2011), once by Wilson as a solo artist (in 1995), and twice by Love as a solo artist (in 1996 and 2017). The vocal was an influence on Neil Sedaka's "Love Will Keep United states Together" (1973), Eric Carmen's "She Did Information technology" (1977), ABBA's "On and on and On" (1980), and Hall & Oates' "Did It in a Minute" (1982).
Background and recording [edit]
"Do It Again" is a self-witting callback to the band'due south before surf-based cloth. Originally titled "Rendezvous", the lyrics to the song were inspired after a day Mike Dear had spent at the beach in which he had gone surfing with an old friend named Bill Jackson.[5] Mike and then showed the lyrics to his cousin Brian Wilson, who proceeded to write the music to Mike's lyrics of nostalgia. Brian stated that he believes the song was the best collaboration that he and Mike ever worked on.[5] Love commented, "He remembers it existence at my house. I recollect it as existence at his house. He starts pounding at the piano, I was summoning up the words and we got a chorus together, which was basically a bunch of doo-wop inspired harmonies. We created that whole song in xv minutes."[6] Other inspiration came from Hank Ballard'due south & The Midnighters 1960 song "Finger Poppin' Fourth dimension".[vii] Carl Wilson recalled in Melody Maker:
Yes, I suppose it has got the old Beach Boys surfing sound. It's back to that surfing thought with the voice harmony and the elementary, direct melody and lyrics. We didn't program the tape as a render to the surf or anything. We merely did it one twenty-four hour period round a piano in the studio. Brian had the idea and played information technology over to us. Nosotros improved on that and recorded it very quickly, in most v minutes. It'southward certainly not an old rails of ours; in fact it was recorded only a few weeks before it was released. We liked how information technology turned out and decided to release it.[v]
Conversely, Bruce Johnston told a reporter in September 1968 that he shared the reporter'south underwhelming opinion of the vocal. "I don't similar it etiher. I don't think that the group were entirely happy with it, simply everyone else was going back to basics, so I suppose it was inevitable that nosotros should."[8]
During the mixdown, engineer Stephen Desper came upwards with the drum upshot heard at the beginning of the rails. He explained that he had "commissioned Philips, in Holland, to build 2 record delay units for use on the route (to double alive vocals). [he] moved four of the Philips PB heads very close together so that one drum strike was repeated four times almost ten milliseconds autonomously, and composite information technology with the original to give the effect you hear."[ citation needed ].
Promotional movie [edit]
A promotional flick, directed past Peter Clifton, was shot in Los Angeles. The picture, shot in color, features the group pulling upward in a van and visiting a surfing shop. The band and then drives to the beach in their van and begins surfing. The first screenings of the promotional motion-picture show were shown on BBC Ane's Superlative of the Pops during broadcasts of the testify on August 8, 22 and 29. In Deutschland the promotional movie was shown in September during broadcasts of the Hits A Go Become testify on ZDF Idiot box. The clip was later featured in the 1969 Peter Clifton Australian surfing film Fluid Journeying.[iv] An alternate promotional film for "Do Information technology Again" was planned with the idea to feature special guest, Beatles member Paul McCartney equally a clerk. Nonetheless the thought was abandoned due to his decorated schedule.[ix]
Release [edit]
Released on July xix, 1968 in the Uk the single, forty days after its release, peaked at No. 1 on the Britain Singles Chart on August 28, 1968, and thus condign the band's second number one hit in the United Kingdom later on "Expert Vibrations" two years earlier.[3] Love remembered thinking that the vocal's success in Great britain "was unbelievable. It showed how many fans we had there and how bonny the whole California lifestyle is." When Friends was issued in Nippon, "Do Information technology Again" was included in its rail list.[10] In Britain's Disc & Music Repeat, Penny Valentine praised the single:
This is a vast improvement on The Beach Boys' last single, and give thanks goodness for it. Information technology sounds like bees bustling on a summer cakewalk and is so completely solid; there isn't room for a fly to pitter-patter in. It goes on very gently and hands and is very, very pleasant. In a way it reminds me of i of the tracks off Pet Sounds, which is overnice to say the least, and a hit it will most certainly be. I can imagine a few people will be muttering, "Well, she said they were finished," but I didn't. I said they should get back to their competent, commercial sound and they have. And so there.[4]
"Do It Again" remained at the top position for just one week, afterwards which it was supplanted past the Bee Gees' "I've Gotta Go a Message to Yous".[3]
Influence and use in media [edit]
Neil Sedaka borrowed the main riff from "Practise It Again" for his own vocal "Dearest Will Proceed U.s. Together," a hit for the Helm and Tennille.[11]
Eric Carmen credited the "did-its" in this song with being the initial inspiration for his 1977 Top 40 hit, "She Did It".[12] Bruce Johnston of the Embankment Boys also participated in the product and vocals of Carmen's song. "Did It in a Minute", a 1982 hitting by Hall & Oates, was in turn inspired by the 'did-its' in both songs.[xiii] [14]
ABBA's "On and On and On" (1980) was too influenced by "Practise It Again", and in response, Mike Love recorded a encompass version of the ABBA vocal for his 1981 album Looking Back with Love.[15]
The opening drum line of "Do It Again" was sampled for "Remember" by French electronic duo Air on their album Moon Safari (1997).[16]
"Exercise Information technology Again" was featured in the films One Crazy Summertime, Flipper, Life on the Longboard, and Happy Feet.[ citation needed ]
Variations [edit]
Alternating studio versions [edit]
"Do Information technology Once again" was kickoff released on an LP in 1969 for the band's xx/twenty album. This version added a fade which consists of hammering and drilling sound effects originating from the Smile "Workshop" session recorded on November 29, 1966. This session was rerecorded for the solo album Brian Wilson Presents Smile (2004). The original Beach Boys recording was used to follow a 1966 have of "I Wanna Be Effectually" on The Grin Sessions (2011).
The vocal's backing track was released on the 1968 album Stack-O-Tracks. On the 1998 compilation album, Countless Harmony Soundtrack, an early on incarnation of the song was released.[ citation needed ] Until 2013, the song was only available in mono because the studio multi-track tape was believed to have been stolen sometime in 1980. The tape was retrieved xxx years subsequently; the first truthful stereo mix was released on the Made in California box set up.[17]
Live performances [edit]
The first officially released live recording of the song was released on the 1970 alive album Live In London. Brian Wilson, who sings falsetto on the studio track, had retired from touring by this time and in concert his part was replaced by horns as evident on the Live In London anthology version. In 1980, a live rendition was recorded, though non released until 2002 on the Practiced Timin': Live at Knebworth England 1980 alive anthology. Footage from the concert was also released on video and DVD format. The footage was also released on the 1998 documentary Endless Harmony with the sound re-mixed by Marker Linett into Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.[ citation needed ]

In 2011 the surviving Embankment Boys; Brian Wilson, Mike Honey, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks came together in the studio to re-tape "Do It Again" every bit function of their 50th anniversary commemoration. The re-recorded version featured Mike Love (verses) and Brian Wilson (bridge) on lead vocals with longtime Beach Boys and Brian Wilson associate, Jeff Foskett, performing the falsetto vocals. It was released as a bonus rail in special editions of That's Why God Made the Radio.[ commendation needed ] "Practice It Again" was the opening vocal performed at all Embankment Boys 50th Reunion Bout concerts.[ commendation needed ] Both Marks and Beach Boys sideman Scott Totten play guitar on the song; according to sideman John Cowsill, the original candy drum audio from 1968 was sampled for the re-recorded version.[eighteen] Other Beach Boys sidemen who play on the re-recording include Cowsill (drums), Darian Sahanaja, Nick Walusko (guitar), Scott Bennett, Gary Griffin, and Brett Simons (bass).[19]
Solo versions [edit]
In 1995, Brian Wilson rerecorded the song for his anthology I But Wasn't Made for These Times and released the track as a single in Britain, although it did non chart. The single also featured his rerecording of "'Til I Dice", which was likewise from I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, and a rare B-side "This Vocal Wants to Sleep with You Tonight".[ citation needed ] He performed the song on the Late Night With David Letterman broadcast of August 17, 1995, with girl Wendy Wilson performing back up vocals.
